Dents, Chips and Glue Marks: Repairs Before Finishing

Finding a dent, a chip, a small crack, or a shiny glue mark on a fresh kit is normal, and almost all of it is fixable at home. This guide walks you through the common cosmetic repairs you do before you seal or stain, so your finish goes on clean and even. Work slowly, test on scrap when you can, and read the whole fix before you start it.

Applies to: Unfinished kit bodies, necks, and fretboards with build dings, plus veneer-topped bodies showing glue marks or bleed-through. These are repairs to make before or during finishing.

Arrived damaged? Fix 1: Steam-raise a shallow dent

A dent is compressed wood. The grain is not broken, the fibers are just pushed down, so you can lift them back with moisture and heat.

This works on bare timber, like an unfinished body, neck, or fretboard. A sealed body rarely dents, because the seal coat protects it, but if yours has a sealer coat over the dent, lightly sand the sealer away in that spot first and reapply it once the dent is raised.

You need a soldering iron, a clean rag, and water.

  1. Switch on the soldering iron and let it heat up.
  2. Dampen the clean rag. It should be damp, not dripping.
  3. Fold the rag over itself two or three times so the iron never touches the wood directly, and lay it over the dent.
  4. Apply heat to the spot until the rag is mostly dry. Do not hold the iron in one place too long. Think of it as warming the area, not pressing hard on the dent.
  5. Check your work, and repeat if the dent is still visible.

A shallow dent can lift in about a minute. Deeper dents take longer. If a deep dent will not rise after a few tries, stop steaming and fill it instead with a tinted filler that matches the bare wood, then level it using Fix 2.

Fix 2: Drop-fill a deep chip

A chip is different from a dent. Here a piece has actually been knocked out and the grain looks torn. Most chips happen after a finish is on, so you are usually repairing the finish coats with a drop fill, not the timber underneath.

How you fill depends on what the chip went through:

  • Clear gloss coats only: superglue bonds well with most finishes. Fill, then scrape and sand flat.
  • Color coat affected: fill with the same color you used, then rebuild the seal coat over it. Because this is a kit, you likely have leftover finishing supplies or can order more of the exact color, which makes matching far easier than on a factory guitar.
  • Bare, unfinished wood: use a tinted filler close to the timber color. Any small mismatch hides under stain and disappears under a solid color.

You need a razor blade and masking tape, your fill material (matching color, superglue for a clear coat, or tinted filler for bare wood), a syringe or similar for tiny amounts, medium to light grades of sandpaper, and polishing rags.

  1. Burr the edge of the razor blade by running it against a metal object. That tiny burr is what you drag back over the fill to smooth it. This is a tip from master guitar repairer Dan Erlewine.
  2. Wrap the outer edges of the blade with masking tape so the cutting edge sits just above the surface. This lets you scrape the fill flat without the blade catching and scratching the body.
  3. Clean the chip. Remove any loose material from its edges with a small sharp blade so the area is free of debris.
  4. Fill the chip with your matching color using the syringe.
  5. For a clear coat, add a small amount of superglue over the previous layer so the fill sits slightly proud of the surface.
  6. Let it dry.
  7. Drag the burred razor blade over the raised fill. Use light pressure, since a sharp blade removes most of the excess on its own.
  8. Sand the spot, working through the grades until no scratch marks remain, then polish it back to match.

Fix 3: Glue a hairline crack

The kit repair guides do not cover cracks in detail, so treat this as general practice. A hairline crack is a fine split in the wood, and a thin cyanoacrylate glue (thin superglue) is the usual fix, because it wicks deep into the split on its own.

  1. Clean the crack and blow out any dust so the glue can flow in.
  2. If the crack will flex open slightly, ease it open so the glue reaches inside, then run thin superglue along it and let capillary action pull it in.
  3. Press or lightly clamp the crack closed, and wipe any squeeze-out at once, before it cures on the surface.
  4. Once fully cured, level the line with the same burred-blade scrape and sand from Fix 2.

Keep this to cosmetic, hairline splits in a body face or similar spot. A crack that runs deep, moves under light pressure, or sits on the neck or a glue joint is a structural issue, not a cosmetic one. Stop and see “When to stop and ask” below.

Fix 4: Scrape and sand away a glue smear

Kits sometimes arrive with a little excess glue on the body, usually from the glue that holds the binding and the veneer top in place. The glue is PVA-based, and it matters because PVA seals the wood and blocks stain, which leaves an uneven finish. Remove it by hand. Do not reach for solvents, which can drive the glue deeper, weaken the binding, or harm the veneer.

For glue on a solid body (not on a veneer), you have three tools:

  • Heat and moisture: apply warm to hot water with a clean rag and try to wipe the glue away. If it resists, warm it with a heat gun or hair dryer on a low setting.
  • Scraping: use a furniture scraper or a sharp blade. A longer blade helps, since it has enough flex to bend to the body’s contours.
  • Sanding: start with a medium grit around 120 and work up through finer grades until the scratch marks are gone and the spot matches the rest of the body.

To check your work, dampen the area with water. If the moisture pools instead of soaking in, glue is still there, so keep going. This Fix 4 is for solid body wood. Glue on a veneer needs the gentler approach in Fix 5.

Fix 5: The veneer glue bleed-through fix

A decorative maple veneer (flame or tiger-stripe, spalted, or curly and burl maple) is a paper-thin sheet glued to the body, usually only about 0.6 mm (about 1/42 inch) or less. At the factory the veneer is pressed on with glue, and because it is so thin, glue can bleed through the pores to the surface. That glue seals the wood and stops stain absorbing evenly, which shows up as a blotchy finish. It is often invisible on bare wood and only appears after the first coat of stain, so early detection matters.

Confirm it is glue first. Not every blotch is bleed-through, and misreading it can make things worse. Glue bleed-through has hard, defined edges that look almost masked off, a shiny or reflective look under angled light even after sanding, and a pattern that follows the pressure and squeeze-out zones near routed areas and seams. By contrast, oil pooling has soft, feathered edges and darker patches, over-sanding looks dull and follows your sanding strokes, and veneer compression shows soft, gradual transitions that improve with light sanding. Sharp-edged, shiny light patches that do not improve with more sanding are almost always glue.

To reveal glue before you finish:

  • Alcohol or mineral spirits: lightly wipe the bare veneer with denatured alcohol or mineral spirits. The veneer darkens, and glue spots stay lighter, glossier, and more reflective. A thin mist of water works too, but alcohol and mineral spirits evaporate fast and will not swell the veneer.
  • Sand and look: gently sand and watch for shinier areas. The veneer is very thin, so avoid coarse paper.

To remove light, surface glue before finishing:

  • Scraping: a sharp scraper or razor blade held at a low angle shaves dried glue off the surface without removing much wood. This only helps surface-level glue, not glue that soaked in deep.
  • Sanding: use 320 to 400 grit by hand only (never a power or block sander) or fine steel wool, and check often. You are abrading the surface, not cutting glue away, so this only works for light contamination.

Skip solvents. Once glue has penetrated the veneer they will not dissolve it, and even mild ones like vinegar can react with the wood and cause discoloration, which shows badly on pale figured maple.

If the glue is already deep or the stain is already blotchy, there is no fail-safe way to remove it without damaging the veneer. Contain it instead:

  • Light glue, finishing not started: try a pre-stain conditioner to even out absorption. Test your stain on a scrap of veneer first to see how visible the problem still is.
  • Deep glue or an already-blotchy top: color with tinted clear coats over the sealed wood instead of relying on stain. A tinted poly, acrylic, or nitro lacquer lays color on top, where the glue no longer blocks it. If the affected area is small and near an edge, a burst finish (a darker edge) can hide it.

One more caution: do not over-wet a veneer while cleaning it, or it can bubble. If a bubble does form, warm the area, cut a small slit, inject a little PVA glue, and weight it flat for 24 hours.

What not to sand through

This is the one warning to remember above all others. A veneer is only about 0.6 mm (about 1/42 inch) thick, so there is almost no material to spare. Avoid heavy sanding. Most first-time builders who keep sanding a stubborn spot will sand straight through the veneer, and once that happens the only real fix is to remove the veneer completely. When you do sand a veneer, use 320 to 400 grit by hand with light pressure and check constantly. And remember that glue bleed-through leaves hard-edged light patches that do not improve with more sanding, so grinding away at them only risks the veneer for nothing.

When to stop and ask

Take your time, and do not force a repair. If a fix is not working, a crack looks structural, or a part arrived damaged or missing, stop before you make it worse.
