A guitar that keeps drifting out of tune is almost never broken. Tuning stability is a chain of small contact points, the string, the post, the nut, and the bridge, and one loose link lets the pitch wander. Work down this checklist in order, because the causes at the top are the most common and the easiest to fix.
Applies to: every Guitar Kit World electric and bass build, bolt-on or set-neck, hardtail or tremolo.
Find the cause
Start with the symptom that matches yours, then jump to that fix. Change one thing at a time and retune before you judge it.

Fix 1: Stretch new strings in
Check. New strings still have slack in them that pulls out under tension, so they read in tune one minute and flat the next. If only your freshly fitted strings drift and it eases over the first few days, they are simply not broken in yet.
Fix. Tune up to concert pitch. Then gently stretch each string by pulling it away from the fretboard along its length, a few times down the whole string, and tune back to pitch. Repeat this 2 to 3 times and in most cases your new strings will settle and hold. This removes the slackness that makes new strings need constant retuning.
Fix 2: Wind the strings on cleanly
Check. Look at your tuning posts. Coils that cross over each other, or a tall pile of loose wraps, compress and shift under tension, and the string slips flat every time. You want two or three tidy wraps that spiral downward.
Fix. Restring using the proper winding method below. Leave the right amount of slack, then guide each wrap lower on the post than the last so the string leaves the post from the bottom.
The winding walkthrough
- Thread the string through the tuning post hole, then pull about 1.5 in (roughly 38 mm, about the width of most electric guitar first frets) of extra slack back past the post. That gives you enough for a few clean wraps without a huge pile.
- Begin winding the string onto the post while placing a finger to direct each wind lower on the post than the previous one, so the string eventually exits from the lowest position on the post.
- Keep light tension on the string with your other hand as you wind, so every wrap seats tight against the post.
- Winding downward like this increases the break angle of the string as it crosses the nut, which aids tuning stability, and the increased break angle over the nut is also believed to increase sustain.
Fix 3: Free a binding nut
Check. A binding nut grabs the string in its slot instead of letting it slide through. The tell is a “ping” or “ting” as you tune, then the string jumps past the note you were aiming for. It usually hits the thin strings hardest.
Fix. The string needs to move freely through the slot. A widely used, low-risk fix from general setup practice is to lubricate the slot with graphite. Rub the tip of a soft graphite pencil (a standard #2 or HB pencil) back and forth in the slot so a little graphite coats it, then wipe the dust away. Graphite is a dry lubricant, so the string glides instead of grabbing. Do this each time you restring. If a slot is visibly pinched or cut too low and the ping keeps returning, that is nut work for a tech, not a setup tweak.
Fix 4: Set the break angle over the nut
Check. The thin strings need firm downward pressure to seat in the nut. On a flat headstock, the strings that run to the far tuners can leave the nut at too shallow an angle and slip. If your high E and B are the ones that wander, look at the break angle first.
Fix. A string tree (also called a retainer) pulls those strings down toward the headstock behind the nut. That increases the break angle and the downward pressure on the nut, which improves tuning stability. Make sure any string tree your kit uses is present and snug. Winding the string low on the post (Fix 2) does the same job from the other end. Some builds instead use staggered-height posts, shorter for the higher strings and taller for the lower ones, which create the break angle at the post and can remove the need for string trees altogether.

Fix 5: Tighten loose tuner hardware
Check. If a single tuner wobbles, or the whole unit twists when you turn the button, the tuner is loose in the headstock and the string moves with it. Feel each tuner for play.
Fix. Snug the mounting nut on the face of the headstock and the small screw or press-fit bushing on the back. Do not crank them, just make them firm. Inside, a tuner uses a worm gear and pinion: when you turn the button it rotates the worm gear, which drives the pinion that turns the post. If the button spins freely without moving the post, or grinds as it turns, the gear is worn and the tuner needs replacing rather than tightening. Sealed tuners keep dust and moisture out of that gear, while open-gear tuners can need an occasional clean.

Fix 6: Balance the tremolo springs
Check. On a build with a tremolo bridge, if the guitar holds tune until you bend a note or use the arm and then drifts, the floating bridge is not returning to the same resting point. The pull of the strings and the pull of the springs are out of balance.
Fix. The baseplate should sit level, parallel to the body, at pitch. Adjust the spring claw screws in the back cavity: tightening the springs pulls the bridge back, loosening lets the strings pull it forward. Adjust, retune, and repeat until the bridge sits level at pitch and returns to pitch after you use the arm. When you restring, change one string at a time so the balance never fully lets go. Do not force a floating bridge flat against the body, because it is designed to pivot. The full procedure lives in the Final Setup module.
Fix 7: Rule out climate
Check. Wood and steel move with temperature and humidity. If the whole guitar drifts together after a cold car, a hot room, or a change of season, and nothing above is loose, the instrument is just settling into its surroundings.
Fix. Let the guitar come to room temperature before you play or tune it, especially after transport. Keep it out of direct sun, away from heaters, and out of damp. Store it in its case when you are not playing. Remember too that a new neck and new strings keep settling for the first week or two, so a quick retune during that period is normal and not a fault.
