This guide walks you through the full acoustic-electric guitar kit assembly, from finishing the body to gluing the acoustic bridge, threading the piezo undersaddle pickup, and wiring the side-mounted onboard EQ and battery box. This is a universal guide for acoustic-electric kits with a semi-hollow body, a bolt-on neck, a piezo undersaddle pickup, and a side-mounted preamp with an onboard graphic EQ. - Denatured alcohol, or a degreasing cleaning product
- 0000 fine-grade steel wool
- A container to store your finishing supplies

Safety first
Set up a well-ventilated work space and have this gear on hand before you begin.
- Protective eyewear. Use proper safety glasses or a genuine face shield. Regular prescription glasses, reading glasses, and sunglasses are not enough.
- Disposable gloves. Wear them when you apply stains or oil finishes directly to the guitar.
- Masks. Use an N95-rated dust mask for sanding and an R95-rated particle mask for finishing. If you use water-based finishing products, an N95 dust mask may be enough for both sanding and finishing, but check the finish supplier’s recommendations first. Paint fumes are dangerous.
- Ventilation. Keep your work space well ventilated, especially when finishing, to prevent a build-up of potentially toxic fumes.
Section 1: Dry-fit and shape the headstock
Before any glue or finish touches the wood, do a dry run so you know everything fits.
- Mock-install the neck into the body pocket to verify the fit. Check that it sits centered and straight, with snug, even contact along the pocket.
- If your kit comes with a blank headstock and you want a custom shape, do this now, before finishing. Sketch your design on paper, trace it onto the headstock, then cut the shape with a coping saw, jigsaw, or bandsaw. Sand the edges smooth.
Pro tip: When you shape a headstock, leave at least 15 mm of wood around each tuner hole so the headstock stays strong and the tuners have solid material to bite into.
Section 2: Finish the body and neck
A good finish protects the wood and sets the look of the whole build, so do not rush this stage. Finishing happens before hardware and electronics go in.
- Sand. Work through the grits in order, starting around 120 and moving up. Sand with the grain, wipe the dust off between grits, and do not skip grits.
- Fill open grain (if needed). If your body or neck is an open-grain timber such as mahogany or oak, work grain filler into the pores with a small brush or rag, then sand it back flush once it dries. This gives you a smooth base.
- Clean. Wipe the wood down with denatured alcohol or a degreasing cleaner to remove dust and oils before you apply any finish.
- Apply your finish. Follow the instructions for the finish you chose, whether that is a stain, a painted color, or a hand-rubbed oil. Build it up in thin, even coats and let each coat cure as directed.
- Level and buff. Once the finish is fully cured, you can gently rub it out with 0000 fine-grade steel wool for a smooth, even sheen.
Pro tip: Finish the neck and fretboard as carefully as the body. Keep finish out of the neck pocket and off the fretboard’s fret slots so parts still fit and seat correctly afterward.
Section 3: Install the bolt-on neck
- Place the neck into the pocket and confirm a snug, centered fit.
- Check the scale length. Measure from the nut to the center of the 12th fret, then double that distance. That doubled measurement is where the center of the saddle should land, between string holes #3 and #4.
- Use a steel ruler to align the saddle position with the 12th-fret dot inlay as your centerline reference.
- When you are confident in the alignment, screw the neck into place using the neck plate, screws, and cushion.
Section 4: Install the tuners
- Insert each tuning machine into the back of the headstock.
- Add the washers and bushings, then tighten the nuts by hand.
- Lay a steel ruler across the tops of the tuners to line them up straight and evenly spaced.
- Mark the pilot holes, pre-drill them, then drive the mounting screws.
Pro tip: Always pre-drill a pilot hole before driving a screw into the headstock or body. A pilot hole roughly two-thirds the thread thickness of the screw stops the wood from splitting.
Section 5: Install the strap buttons
- Rear button: place it at the center of the lower bout, on the bottom edge of the body.
- Front button: mount it on the upper horn or the neck heel, based on your preference.
- Mark each pilot hole, drill carefully, then screw the button in.
Section 6: Place and glue the acoustic bridge
The bridge carries the saddle and the piezo pickup, and its position sets your guitar’s tuning accuracy. This is the most precision-critical step in the build, so measure twice and glue once.
Measure the rough bridge location and mask the area
- Use a steel ruler to measure from the nut to the center of the 12th fret.
- Double that measurement. This gives you the scale length, which is typically about 25.5 inches, though it depends on your kit.
- Position the bridge so its center point, between string holes #3 and #4, lands on that measurement from the nut.
- Use the neck’s center dot inlays as your vertical centerline reference so the bridge is straight, not skewed.
- Push the neck firmly into the pocket and confirm the snug fit while you measure, so your reference points are accurate.
- Mask off the area around the bridge footprint with painter’s tape.
Prepare the bridge area
- With the area masked, measure the position one more time using the same nut-to-12th-fret method, and make clear reference marks.
- Set the bridge on the body as a template over your marks, then carefully cut away the masking tape only where the bridge will actually sit. You want raw wood under the bridge for a strong glue joint, and finished, masked wood everywhere else.
Drill the pickup wiring hole (if it is not pre-drilled)
- Set the bridge in its correct location without gluing it.
- Use the bridge as a template to mark the exact spot for the pickup wire hole.
- Remove the bridge and drill the hole down and outward from the marked point, into the body cavity.
- Caution: Take care not to drill too far and break through the back of the body. Note your drill depth before you start and go slowly.
Glue the bridge
- Apply wood glue to the raw wood footprint, seat the bridge exactly on your reference marks, and clamp it down.
- Wipe away any glue that squeezes out before it sets, then let the joint cure fully before you string up.

Section 7: Install and wire the onboard EQ, piezo, and battery box
This is the acoustic-electric heart of the build. The system is pre-wired and plug-and-play, so there is no soldering. Your job is to mount the parts and connect the labeled plugs.
Here is what the electronics do:
- The piezo undersaddle pickup sits under the saddle and senses the string vibration through the bridge.
- The preamp and 4-band EQ module mounts in the side of the body and gives you a volume control plus EQ sliders.
- The output jack connects the guitar to your amp.
- The 9-volt battery box powers the preamp and EQ.

How to thread the wires easily
Routing a wire through a hollow body is the fiddly part, and there is a simple trick for it. Feed a length of fishing wire or plastic-coated wire through the cavity first, tape the pickup or jack wire to the end, then pull it back through. Use the same technique for the piezo wire and the output jack wire.
Wiring steps
- Mount the EQ module on the side of the body. Fit the module into the side cavity and secure it with the provided screws. Caution: do not overtighten the screws. That can crack the finish around the cavity.
- Fit the 9-volt battery. Place the battery into its compartment and test the fit now, so you know you can get to it easily to swap it later.
- Connect the piezo wire to the EQ input. Thread the piezo pickup wire through the pre-drilled hole, from the bridge down into the body, then plug it into the labeled piezo input on the EQ module.
- Confirm the volume and output wiring. Mount the output jack securely into its routed cavity, and connect the EQ module’s output wire to the jack. On most kits this connection is already attached.
- Test before you close everything up. Plug the guitar into an amp, lightly tap the saddle area, and move the EQ sliders. If you hear the taps come through the amp, the electronics are working.
Install the EQ control panel
- Align the EQ control panel with its routed cavity.
- Route all the wires neatly inside the body as shown in the wiring diagram, so nothing is pinched or rattling.
- Screw the panel in place with the small screws supplied.
Important: The EQ will not work unless a 9-volt battery is installed and a cable is plugged into the output jack. Plugging in the cable is what activates the circuit, so a silent guitar during testing usually means a dead battery or no cable, not a wiring fault.
Section 8: Install the strings
Use a fresh set of acoustic guitar strings.
- If your bridge is a pinned type, drill the string holes in the bridge at this stage, before installing the strings.
- If your bridge is pinless, install the strings as usual.
- Fit the strings one at a time, threading each through the bridge and up to its tuner.
- Tune up to concert pitch, E A D G B E, before you move on to setup.
Section 9: Set up the neck, action, and intonation
A good setup is what makes the guitar comfortable to play. You may not need every adjustment, so check first and only change what needs changing.
Adjust the neck relief
Relief is the small amount of forward bow in the neck.
- Use the included hex key to reach the truss rod at the headstock.
- To add relief (loosen the truss rod), turn counter-clockwise.
- To flatten the neck (tighten the truss rod), turn clockwise.
- Only adjust 1/8 to 1/4 turn at a time, then retune and re-check.
To check relief, hold down the first fret and the last fret at the same time, then tap the string around the 7th to 9th fret. You should see a slight gap of about 0.25 mm. No gap means the neck is too flat.
Check and adjust the string action
Action is the height of the strings above the fretboard.
- Measure the string height at the 12th fret with a ruler or feeler gauge.
- A good starting point is about 2.5 mm on the low E (6th string) and about 2.0 mm on the high E (1st string).
- If the action feels too high, sand a little material off the bottom of the saddle to lower it. Sand evenly, keep the bottom flat, and test often. Remove too much and the strings will buzz.
Check the intonation
Acoustic guitars do not have individually adjustable saddles the way electrics do, but you can still check intonation.
- Compare the fretted note at the 12th fret to the harmonic at the 12th fret.
- If the fretted note is consistently sharp or flat, reposition the saddle slightly, or check that it is fully seated in its slot.
- For a significant intonation problem, consult a tech or luthier.
Section 10: Final electronics test
With the strings on and tuned, do a full check of the sound system.
- Plug into an acoustic amp.
- Tap on the saddle to confirm the piezo pickup is working.
- Test the volume and all 4 EQ bands (Low, Mid, High, Presence).
- Listen for any unwanted hum, buzz, or cutouts.
Troubleshooting
- No sound? Check the battery and the cable connection, and make sure the piezo is seated flat under the saddle.
- Strings buzzing, or action too high? Adjust the truss rod, or lower the saddle.
- Bridge placement feels wrong? Re-check your 12th-fret measurement and the centerline.
Beginner watch-outs
