A mirror gloss is not a bottle of magic, it is the payoff for leveling every last scratch until light reflects evenly off the surface. This guide picks up after your clear coat has cured and walks you from wet sanding through cutting compound, polish, and wax, with an honest look at machine versus hand. If a soft satin sheen is the look you actually want, there is a shortcut for that too.
Applies to: any Guitar Kit World body or neck finished with a sprayed gloss or clear coat, plus a satin alternative for oil, wax, or wipe-on finishes.
What you need
- Wet and dry sandpaper: 1000, 1500, and 2000 grit (plus 600 or 800 only if you have runs to knock down)
- A flexible sanding block
- A spray bottle of clean water
- Cutting or rubbing compound, and a finer finishing polish (standard automotive polish works well)
- Several clean, soft cloths (microfiber or lint-free cotton)
- A raking light source (a lamp set at a low angle to the surface)
- Optional: a power buffer with a soft foam pad
- Optional: carnauba paste or spray wax for protection
- For a satin finish instead: super fine (0000) grade steel wool
Step 1: Make sure the clear coat is truly cured
Before the step-by-step, here is the whole polishing process from dull clear coat to mirror, start to finish:
This is the step people rush, and rushing it ruins finishes. Dry to the touch is not the same as cured. A finish can feel hard on the surface while it is still soft underneath and slowly gassing off solvent. Polish it in that state and the paper clogs, the compound smears, and you drag scratches into paint that will not buff out. You may even have to repaint.
Check the cure time on your clear coat can and believe it. Some finishes are ready in about two weeks, others need up to 30 days, and cold weather makes both take longer. Do not start until the finish is rock hard. A good test is to press a fingernail into a hidden spot inside a control cavity or the neck pocket. If it leaves a mark, wait. If it still smells of solvent, wait. You need a fully cured finish coat before you polish at all.
Step 2: Level the finish (a quick recap)
Polishing only shines what is already flat, so the surface has to be leveled before you get near a cloth. If you followed the finishing walk-through you have already knocked the orange peel and any runs down with sandpaper. Here is the short version so the ladder below makes sense.
Use 600 or 800 grit only on heavy runs and drips, because those grits cut fast and cut deep. Everywhere else, start higher. Keep the paper away from sharp edges and contours, where the finish is thinnest. Stop when the whole surface looks evenly dull, with no shiny low spots left when you hold it to the light. Step 3: Work up the wet-sand ladder
Now you refine that leveled surface through finer and finer grits until the scratches are too small to see. This is wet sanding, and keeping everything wet is the whole trick.
- Soak your wet and dry paper in water, ideally overnight, so the backing turns soft and pliable.
- Wrap it around a flexible sanding block so it follows the body’s gentle curves.
- Spray the surface with water and sand with light pressure, keeping the block moving. Never dwell in one spot, and never sand dry.
- Start around 1000 grit if the finish is already smooth, or 600 to 800 only where you have runs. Then work up through 1500 and finally 2000 grit.
- Wipe the milky slurry off often and check in raking light. Shiny pinpricks are low spots the paper has not reached yet. Keep going until the sheen is even.
When you finish 2000 grit the surface will look like a flat, even, semi-matte haze. That dullness is correct. It is thousands of microscopic scratches all the same tiny size, and the next step turns them into a mirror. Keep off the edges the entire time. If your hardware store does not carry 1500 and 2000 grit, an auto parts store will, since detailers use them.
Step 4: Cut with compound, then refine with polish
This is where the haze becomes a reflection. Work one small section at a time, roughly the size of your hand, so the product never dries out before you have worked it.
Put a small amount of cutting compound on a clean cloth or straight onto the body. Rub it in with firm, overlapping passes. The compound is a very fine liquid abrasive, so it is really just polishing at a grit finer than your 2000 paper, and you will watch the flat haze clear into gloss as you work. Wipe the section with a clean part of the cloth and check it in the light.
Then switch to a finer finishing polish and a fresh cloth. This removes the faint micro-haze the compound leaves behind and deepens the shine. Standard automotive polish is inexpensive and works as well here as any specialty product. Use a separate clean cloth for each stage, because a cloth loaded with the coarser compound will just put fine scratches back into the surface you are trying to perfect. Move across the whole guitar this way: front, back, sides, and around the curves.

Step 5: Machine or by hand, honestly
You can do all of this by hand or with a power buffer, and each has a real trade-off.
By hand is slower and takes more elbow grease, but it is very hard to do lasting damage. Pressure and heat stay low, so it is the safer choice, especially along edges and corners. For a first build, hand polishing is the lower-risk path and it absolutely can reach a full mirror.
A power buffer is faster and can pull up a deeper gloss, but it builds heat and can burn through a thin finish in seconds, most often right on an edge or a hard corner. Run it too fast or dwell too long and it also leaves swirl marks. If you use one, keep it on a low speed, use light pressure, keep the pad moving at all times, and never let it stop or lean on an edge. A good compromise is to machine the big flat areas and finish every edge and contour by hand.
Step 6: Seal it with wax (optional)
Once the gloss is there, a coat of wax protects it and adds a little more depth. Carnauba paste or spray wax both work. Wipe a thin film over the finish, let it haze, then buff it off with a clean, dry cloth. Wax is protection and a touch of shine, not a repair, so do all of your cutting and polishing first. Refresh it every few months, or whenever water stops beading on the surface.
Step 7: Prefer a satin finish? Reach for steel wool
Not everyone wants a mirror, and a soft satin sheen is a popular, completely valid final look that also hides fingerprints and small scratches. To get there, stop after the clear coat has cured and skip the compound entirely.
Take a pad of super fine (0000) grade steel wool and rub the surface in small, overlapping circles. Keep it moving and work the whole body until the sheen is uniform and any fine sanding scratches disappear into an even, low luster. Because you are working on cured clear coat and not bare wood, grain direction no longer matters, which is why circles are safe here. A thin wipe of wax over the top evens the sheen further.
If your kit has a thin veneer top and you plan to use a wipe-on wood polish rather than a sprayed gloss, keep it gentle. A light hand sand with fine paper (around 400 grit), a wipe with a damp cloth to raise the grain, and a final light sand is enough. Never use coarse paper or a power sander on a thin veneer, and mask off anything you do not want polished.

Step 8: When polishing goes wrong
Most polishing problems come from the same few causes, and every one of them is easier to prevent than to fix.
