How to Build a V-Shape Electric Guitar Kit

Building a V-Shape electric guitar kit is one of the most rewarding DIY projects you can take on, and you do not need to be a professional woodworker to finish it. Tools you’ll need

Safety first

Protect yourself before any cutting, sanding, finishing, or soldering.

  • Wear real safety glasses or a face shield. Prescription glasses and sunglasses do not count as eye protection.
  • Wear disposable gloves when you apply stains or oil finishes.
  • Wear an N95-rated dust mask while sanding.
  • Wear an R95-rated particle mask while finishing. Water-based products may only need an N95, so check your supplier’s recommendation.
  • Solder does not melt until about 185°C (365°F), and soldering irons run far hotter, roughly 392°F to 896°F. Treat the iron as dangerous at all times.
  • Always work in a well-ventilated space so fumes from finishing and soldering do not build up.

Section 1: Inspect and prepare the body and neck

Under good light, look over the body and neck for defects. Address large dents, deep scratches, and any leftover glue residue now, before you finish, because a finish will lock those flaws in.

Sand the entire body with 180-grit sandpaper, then follow with 240-grit. Use a hard sanding block on the flat areas so you keep the surfaces true and the edges crisp. Work through the grits in order and do not skip grades, since each grit removes the scratches left by the one before it.

If you plan to stain raw wood, sand up to 400 grit for an even color, then wipe the surface with a little denatured alcohol or water to raise the grain before your final sanding pass.

Pro tip: Glue stains are only a real concern on guitars with binding or a veneer top, where they can show through a clear finish.

Section 2: Finish the body and neck

A good finish protects the wood and makes your guitar look the way you want. Finishing takes the most calendar time because each coat needs to dry, so plan for several days. This section works the same for almost any kit, so treat it as a standalone skill you can reuse.

  1. Fill open grain if needed. Open-grain woods such as mahogany or oak have tiny pores. For a glass-smooth surface, rub in a wood grain filler, let it dry, and sand it back flush.
  2. Seal or stain. If you are staining, apply the stain evenly with a rag or brush, wipe off the excess, and let it dry fully.
  3. Build your finish. Apply your chosen finish (oil, wipe-on, or spray) in thin, even coats. Thin coats dry better and sag less than thick ones. Let each coat dry before the next.
  4. Level between coats. Once you have enough coats, level lightly with fine sandpaper, working up toward 1500 grit for a gloss finish. Knock back the shine between coats with 0000 steel wool if your finish calls for it.
  5. Let it cure. Give the final finish time to harden before you install hardware. Rushing this step is the most common way to press fingerprints or dents into a soft finish.

Pro tip: Keep the back of the neck to a thin, satin feel so your hand slides easily. A thick, sticky gloss there can slow your playing.

Section 3: Dry-fit and install the neck

The neck join sets your string height and playability, so do not rush it. V-Shape kits come as either a bolt-on neck (held by screws and a neck plate) or a set-neck (glued into the body). Check which one you have.

Dry-fit first (both types):

  1. Gently push the neck heel into the back of the neck pocket, then push the neck down flat.
  2. Check the scale length by measuring from the edge of the nut to the exact middle of the 12th fret, then doubling that number. On a V-Shape kit this is typically 24.75 inches (629 mm), but confirm it against your kit’s spec.
  3. Look closely at the neck pocket for any sideways movement. The neck should sit centered, with the strings tracking down the middle of the fingerboard.
  4. Lay a steel ruler along the fingerboard so it runs over the bridge location. This shows you the neck angle and whether the bridge will sit at a workable height.

Pro tip: Set-neck bodies usually have tighter neck pockets than bolt-ons, so the dry-fit can feel snug. If there is a small gap, you can shim it with a thin sliver of scrap wood or fill it before finishing.

If you have a bolt-on neck:

  • With the neck seated and centered, mark and drill pilot holes through the neck-plate holes into the neck heel (use the drilling method in Section 4).
  • Fit the neck plate on the back, start all screws by hand, then tighten them evenly. Snug is enough. Do not overtighten, or you can crack the finish or strip the wood.

If you have a set-neck:

  • Get the dry-fit and neck angle exactly right first, because once the glue is in you cannot easily change it.
  • Apply an even coat of wood glue (Titebond or PVA) to the pocket and heel, seat the neck, and clamp it.
  • Wipe away any glue squeeze-out right away with a damp rag before it dries.
  • Let the glue cure fully, following the glue maker’s stated time, before you string up.

Section 4: Install the hardware

Most hardware is held by small screws, so drilling clean, correctly sized pilot holes is the single most important skill here. A pilot hole that is too big lets a screw spin loose. One that is too small can split the wood.

How to drill a safe pilot hole:

  1. Put a strip of painter’s masking tape where the screw will go, and mark the exact hole location on the tape with a pen. The tape also protects the finish.
  2. Make a small indentation on your mark with a center punch. This keeps the drill bit from wandering.
  3. Choose a drill bit about two-thirds the thickness of the screw, measured across the threads.
  4. Mark your drill depth by wrapping a flag of masking tape around the bit at about two-thirds of the screw’s length, and stop drilling when you reach the tape.
  5. Drill straight and square to the surface. A drill press makes this easier and more accurate than a handheld drill.
  6. For solid-color finishes, run a countersink bit lightly around the hole edge to chamfer it so the screw seats cleanly.

Pro tip: On less dense woods such as mahogany or basswood, you may want to drill a slightly smaller or shallower pilot hole so the screw threads still get a firm bite.

Bridge. Install your bridge according to its type. A Tune-O-Matic sits on two posts with a separate stopbar tailpiece behind it. A string-through-body hardtail anchors the strings through ferrules in the back of the body. Position the bridge so the scale length you measured earlier comes out correct, because bridge placement sets your intonation range.

Tuners. Fit the tuners into the headstock in the 3+3 layout, three per side. Line them up straight before you drive the small mounting screws, using the pilot-hole method above.

Output jack. Mount the output jack in its cavity or plate. You will wire it in the next section.

Strap buttons and the V-Shape balance note. A V-shaped body does not rest on your thigh the way a standard body does. Sitting down, most players either cradle the lower wing on the thigh or play the guitar upright between the legs in a classical position. Standing up, a V can be prone to neck dive, where the headstock drops toward the floor. Where you place the rear strap button changes how the guitar hangs and balances. Install the strap buttons in your kit’s marked locations first, then try the guitar on a strap before you commit to any extra holes. If your kit lets you choose, mounting the rear button on the lower wing, rather than at the very tip of the body, can lift the neck and reduce dive.

Section 5: Wire the electronics

A V-Shape kit uses a simple, proven layout: two humbuckers (an HH setup), one volume control, one tone control, and a 3-way toggle switch. The toggle selects the neck pickup, both pickups together, or the bridge pickup. Follow the wiring diagram included with your kit, because pickup lead colors differ between brands.

Solder cleanly:

  • Tin the iron by coating the tip with a little fresh solder, and tin the parts before you join them.
  • Preheat the lug or component with the iron, then feed solder onto the joint rather than onto the iron tip. Let the heated metal melt the solder so it flows and grips.
  • Keep the iron on the joint just long enough to transfer heat. A good joint is shiny and smooth, not dull and lumpy.

The signal path, in plain terms:

  • Both humbuckers connect to the 3-way toggle switch, which chooses neck, both, or bridge.
  • The selected signal runs through the volume and tone controls, which set loudness and treble roll-off. The tone control uses a small capacitor to bleed high frequencies to ground, and your kit’s diagram shows its value and placement.
  • From the volume control the signal goes to the output jack, where your cable plugs in.
  • All the ground connections (pickup grounds, the metal pot casings, the bridge ground wire, and the jack sleeve) join together as a common ground, usually on the back of a pot.

Keep your leads tidy and only as long as they need to be. When everything is soldered, gently seat the controls into their cavity and screw the jack in place.

Section 6: String up and set up your guitar

This is where a kit becomes a real, playable instrument. Work through these four adjustments in order, and keep the guitar tuned to concert pitch the whole time so the neck stays under normal string tension.

Adjust the neck relief

Neck relief is the tiny amount of forward bow in the neck.

  1. Hold down the low E string at both the first fret and the last fret at the same time (a capo helps at the first fret).
  2. Lightly tap the string over the 12th fret and look at the small gap between the string and the fret. That gap is your relief.
  3. Adjust the truss rod with the included hex wrench. Turn counter-clockwise to add relief (more bow), or clockwise to flatten the neck.
  4. Make small changes, only 1/8 to 1/4 turn at a time, then re-check. Small moves prevent damage.

Adjust the action

Action is your string height above the frets.

  1. Measure from the top of the 12th fret to the underside of the string.
  2. A good starting point is about 2.4 mm on the low E side and 1.6 mm on the high E side.
  3. On a Tune-O-Matic, raise or lower the whole bridge on its two posts. On a bridge with individual saddles, turn each saddle post clockwise to raise it or counter-clockwise to lower it.
  4. Keep both sides of any saddle balanced so it does not tilt.

Intonate the guitar

Intonation keeps the guitar in tune all the way up the neck.

  1. Tune to standard pitch.
  2. Compare the open harmonic at the 12th fret with the fretted note at the 12th fret. They should be the same note, one octave apart.
  3. If the fretted note is sharp, lengthen the string by moving its saddle back, away from the neck. Turn the intonation screw counter-clockwise.
  4. If the fretted note is flat, shorten the string by moving its saddle forward, toward the neck. Turn the screw clockwise.
  5. Re-tune and re-check after each change.

Pro tip: The bridge sits at a slight angle, with the saddles farther back on the bass side. That angle is normal, since it compensates the thicker strings. A scale length that is off by a couple of millimeters can usually be corrected here at the saddles.

Set the pickup height

  1. Press the string down at the last fret.
  2. Measure the gap from the top of the pickup’s pole piece to the underside of the string.
  3. A good starting point is about 2.4 mm. Adjust the pickup mounting screws on the surround to raise or lower each pickup.
  4. Closer to the strings gives more output but can pull the strings out of tune if it is too close. Farther away is cleaner and quieter. Trust your ears.

Pro tip: Play the guitar for a few days, then revisit the setup. New strings settle, the wood moves slightly, and small issues like fret buzz or intonation drift are easy to dial out on a second pass.
