You are about to build a real, playable bass from a kit, and you do not need to be a professional luthier to do it. This guide walks you through how to build a violin bass kit from start to finish: a semi-hollow, short-scale, 4-string bass with a set neck, two mini humbuckers, and a floating bridge with a trapeze tailpiece. It covers every stage of DIY bass kit assembly, from prep and finishing through hardware, wiring, string install, and final setup. Take your time, read each section fully before you start it, and enjoy the process.

Safety gear
Fumes and dust are the real hazards on this build, so set up a well ventilated work space and keep the following on hand.
- Eye protection. Use proper safety glasses or a genuine face shield, not regular prescription, reading, or sunglasses.
- Disposable gloves. Wear them whenever you apply stains or oil finishes directly to the wood.
- Masks. Use an N95-rated dust mask for sanding and an R95-rated particle mask for finishing. If you use water-based finishing products an N95 may cover both, but check the finish supplier’s recommendation first. Paint fumes are dangerous.
- Ventilation. Keep air moving, especially while finishing, to prevent a build-up of toxic fumes.
The four stages of the build
Every great kit build comes down to four stages, and this guide follows them in order:
- Preparation and finishing. The surface appearance of your bass, whether you stain, paint, or apply a hand-rubbed oil finish.
- Hardware installation. Fitting the tuners, strap buttons, bridge, and pickups.
- Connecting the electronics. Wiring the pickups to the control board and output jack, and grounding everything.
- Final setup. Installing the strings and dialing in neck relief, action, intonation, and pickup height.
Section 1: Preparation and finishing
Inspecting the body
Once you have unboxed everything, inspect the body and neck under good light. Identify problem areas early, before you commit to the project. Look for large dents that need filling, deep scratches that need sanding, and glue residue on the surface, which can stop a finish from soaking in evenly. Glue stains are mainly a concern on bodies with binding or a veneer top.
Dry-fitting the neck
This is a set-neck bass, which means the neck is glued into the body rather than bolted on. Before any glue, dry-fit it. Push the heel gently into the back of the neck pocket first, then lower the neck down flat. Seating the heel first reduces the risk of chipping the thin edges of the neck pocket before the neck is installed.
Checking the bridge position and scale length
A violin bass is short scale, and the floating bridge is not fixed in one spot, so it helps to know where it should sit. Check the target scale length by measuring from the edge of the nut closest to the fretboard to the middle of the 12th fret, then doubling that number. For the exact scale length of your kit, check the product page.
If the measurement seems off by a few millimeters, do not panic. The bridge on a bass sits at a slight angle to compensate for the extra mass of the thicker strings, and each saddle can be moved forward or back later using the intonation adjustment screws.
Checking the neck alignment
With the neck seated in the pocket, it should have very little sideways movement. If it does move, mark the center of the neck heel and line that up with the center of the neck and bridge pickup cavities. If that leaves a gap on either side of the neck, you can shim it by cutting small sections of scrap wood with a craft knife and gluing them to the sides of the neck pocket. Smaller gaps can simply be filled before finishing.
Checking the neck angle
Keep the bridge and steel ruler in place after checking alignment. Run the steel ruler along the fretboard and out over the bridge. With the bridge sitting flat on the body, the ruler should sit just above the saddles. That tells you the neck angle will give you a workable string height once everything is assembled.
Shaping the headstock (optional)
Most builders leave the headstock as it comes, but if you want to shape your own, work carefully.
- Sketch some rough concepts, then transfer your chosen design to paper at full size. Leave a margin of at least 15 mm between the last tuning hole and the edge of the headstock (about the same spacing as between the tuning holes).
- Cut out the design and glue it to a thin piece of scrap timber to use as a template. Cardboard also works and is often easier to shape.
- Cut out the template with a coping saw, jigsaw, or ideally a bandsaw, then sand its edges smooth.
- Clamp the template to the headstock and trace the outline. Cut following the template as a guide, or remove it and cut to your traced lines.
Protect the neck while cutting, cut well outside the lines to leave room for sanding, and keep the saw as vertical as you can for straight edges. If you are unsure, keep it simple. Sand the finished edges until they are as smooth as the rest of the neck.
Gluing in the set neck
You can leave the neck loose until after finishing, which lets you build a scrap-wood handle to hold the body while you spray. When you are ready to glue:
- Clean out the neck pocket and the neck heel. Brush away all dust so both surfaces are clean.
- Using a paintbrush, apply PVA or a similar wood glue evenly across the bottom of the neck pocket and the neck heel. Aim for a full, even coat on both surfaces.
- Clamp the neck to the body. One clamp works, but two is better. Put scrap wood between the clamp and the finish to protect the surface, and clamp firmly.
- Follow the glue maker’s guidance on cure time before you remove the clamps and handle the bass. Leaving it overnight usually does the job.
Prep sanding
Check the body once more for glue stains. Most sand out, but on a veneer top go gently, because the veneer is thin. Try lifting a stain with a little warm water and a clean rag first.
- Sand the whole body with 180-grit sandpaper.
- Follow with 240-grit. If you plan to stain the raw wood, sand up to 400-grit, but no finer, or the stain may not absorb well.
- After 240-grit (or 400 if staining), wipe a little moisture over the surface. Denatured alcohol is ideal because it evaporates before it soaks in, though water also works. This raises the grain, which you then sand flat. Grain usually raises only once, so you can be confident it will stay flat through finishing.
Grain filling
Grain filling is optional and depends on your wood and the look you want. Open-grain timbers such as oak or mahogany have pores that stop a flat finish unless they are filled. Basswood is usually fine either way. If you are spraying a solid color, a primer can level and seal the surface instead. A tinted grain filler is a nice option if you want to accentuate the grain, because the excess sands off while the filler stays in the pores.
- Mix enough filler for the whole body, following the product’s directions for application, clean-up, and safety.
- Apply it with a clean rag, first working with the grain, then across the grain, pushing the filler into the pores over several passes.
- Leave it about ten minutes, then wipe away the excess with a clean damp rag.
- Once dry, sand back to the surface, working from 120-grit up to 240. Remove the excess without digging into the wood and opening new pores.
- Inspect the surface and repeat if needed.
Masking
Before you spray any finish, mask the areas that must stay clean: the neck pocket and body cavities, the tuning-peg holes on the headstock, the bridge and tailpiece hardware holes, and the truss rod. Mask the fretboard when you spray the back of the neck. If your body has binding, you can either mask it (some finish usually creeps under the tape and needs cleaning up) or leave it and scrape it clean with a razor blade before your clear coats. Scraping is usually the better use of time, but do mask the binding if you see any cracks, because finish will seep in and stain it permanently.
Finishing
It is beyond the scope of one guide to cover every way to finish a bass, but these rules apply to almost any finish you choose:
- Choose your finish based on the wood. It would be a shame to hide a beautiful grain pattern under a solid color, and staining a plain piece of basswood may not look great either.
- Weigh how protective a finish is and how it might affect tone as well as looks.
- Wear gloves and a mask and work in a well ventilated area. Some finishing fumes are toxic.
- Clean the body with a product that includes a degreasing agent, then wear gloves whenever you handle it afterward.
- Work in a relatively dust-free space and clean out the body cavities thoroughly after sanding, because trapped dust becomes airborne when you turn the body over.
- If staining, wipe away any excess that has not absorbed after about ten minutes.
- Keep your products compatible. If you spray from cans, use the same brand and type for your seal coat, color coat, and clear coats.
- If you spray outdoors, avoid windy days.
- Spray the sides of the body first, so that when you spray the front and back you cover any overspray from the sides.
- Do not spray heavy coats. Several light coats beat one or two heavy ones and avoid runs.
- Do not lay down too many coats within the recommended drying window. More than about three coats in a day can stop the first coat curing properly.
- If you use steel wool before finishing, remove every stray fiber.
- Hang the bass to dry in a cool, dry place. Never leave it outside, where it will attract dust.
- You can usually respray within an hour. If you wait longer, you may need to leave it 24 hours and then lightly scuff with 600 to 800-grit so the next coats adhere. Always check your product label.

Section 2: Hardware installation
Hardware installation means fitting the tuners, strap buttons, bridge, and pickups. A few best practices apply to all of it.
Drilling pilot holes
Drill a pilot hole for every screw that goes into the body or neck. The small screws that hold your tuners are fragile and strip easily without one.
- Put masking tape where the hole will go and mark it with a pen. Pencil rarely leaves a sharp line on tape.
- Make an indentation through the tape with a center punch or similar tool.
- Choose a drill bit about two-thirds the thickness of the screw, and mark the depth on the bit with a small piece of tape at roughly two-thirds the screw length.
- Aim to drill straight. A drill press is ideal if you have one.
- Chamfer the edge of each body hole with a countersink bit to prevent chipping, especially under a solid color finish.
On less dense timbers such as mahogany and basswood, you may want to drill a little shallower than two-thirds depth.
Installing the truss rod cover
The truss rod cover is not strictly hardware, but it should sit centered on the headstock. Lay masking tape on the headstock, measure to the halfway point (this neck has a nut width of 42 mm, so the center is 21 mm), and draw a centerline running from the nut to the end of the headstock. Align the truss rod cover with the nut and line up the screw hole at its tip with your centerline.
Installing the strap buttons
Strap buttons hold the bass when you play standing, and their placement also affects how the instrument balances. On this bass, the rear strap button sits in the center of the lower bout, and the front button goes into the top horn. Use the same pilot-hole method as all other hardware: mark on tape, punch, drill to the correct size, and drive the screw.

Installing the tuners
Depending on your headstock, you may first need to separate the tuners into left and right sets.
- Insert each tuner from the back of the headstock, with the mounting hole facing back toward the body.
- Place the washers over the tuner posts, add the bushings on the front, and hand-tighten the tuners.
- Align the tuners with a steel ruler so they sit in a straight line.
- Mark the mounting-screw locations, drill your pilot holes, and drive the small screws.
- Remove any protective covering by pressing masking tape firmly onto the back of each tuner and pulling the covering and tape off together in one motion.
A quick trick: install the first and last tuner, lay a steel ruler between them, and mark a straight line on tape to locate the pilot holes for the tuners in between.

Installing and grounding the bridge and tailpiece
A violin bass uses a trapeze tailpiece that anchors the string ball ends, plus a separate floating bridge that rests on the top and is held in place by string tension alone. Because the bridge is not screwed down, you will set its final position later, when you install the strings.
The one wiring job here is the bridge ground. A loose black ground wire in your packaging connects the metal bridge and tailpiece hardware to the electronics, which stops hum and keeps you and the strings grounded.
- Strip a few millimeters of the PVC coating to expose the bare wire.
- Route the wire so its bare end will sit flush against the metal of the tailpiece mounting hardware once that hardware is fitted, with the other end running into the control cavity. Look for the small channel or hole that carries it through to the electronics.
- Bend a small hook in the top of the bare wire so it stays put and keeps solid metal-to-metal contact.
- Fit the tailpiece so it traps the ground wire firmly against the metal. Do not fully tension it yet, because the tailpiece will not hold its position until the strings are on.
- Set the floating bridge on the top in roughly the right spot for now. You will fine-tune its position during setup.
Pro tip: Test the ground later by touching a metal string and listening for the hum to drop. If it does not, open the cavity and check that the bare ground wire is actually contacting metal.
Installing the pickups
First tell the two mini humbuckers apart. You can identify them by the profile of the pickup surround: the one with the deeper surround is the bridge pickup.
- Take either pickup and position it so its lead wire is next to the top right corner of the pickup cavity.
- Thread the lead through the channel below the pickup cavities until you can see it through the lower f-hole.
- Reach in through the f-hole with needle-nose pliers and pull the wire through. You can tape it to the side of the body to keep it out of the way.
- Fit a couple of strings for reference (the low E and high E are enough).
- Position each pickup at the very front of its cavity, then align it so the outer pole pieces line up under the low E and high E strings. A small square can help you check the pickup is square to the edge of the fretboard.
- Mark the pilot holes as before, lift the pickups out, and drill.
Section 3: Wiring the electronics
Most of a violin bass harness comes pre-wired on the control board, so you are not building the circuit from scratch. Your job is to make the few connections that have to pass through the body: the pickup leads, the output jack, and the bridge ground you routed earlier.
How the controls work
A violin bass has a distinctive control layout, and knowing it helps you connect everything correctly. You have two pickups, a neck and a bridge mini humbucker, and a control board that carries two volume controls, one for each pickup, plus a set of switches labeled on the plate for bass, rhythm, and treble. Together those give you the classic voicing of this instrument: blend the two pickup volumes, and use the switches to shape the tone and change between a fuller rhythm sound and a brighter solo sound. Because the board arrives pre-wired, you mainly connect the pickups and jack into it rather than wiring each control by hand.
Soldering basics
If you have not soldered before, you need a soldering iron, solder, and a damp sponge to clean the tip. Practice on some scrap before you touch your components. An entry-level iron is fine, and your kit includes plenty of solder.
Be careful, because irons get very hot. Solder does not melt until about 185 degrees C (365 degrees F), and irons can run far hotter, up to 392 to 896 degrees F. Two things make a clean joint every time:
- Tinning. Keep a light coating of solder on the iron tip. It stops the tip oxidizing and helps transfer heat. Tin the components you are connecting to as well.
- Preheating. Soldering is really about transferring heat. Heat the lug or tab you are joining to until it is hot enough that the solder is drawn onto it, rather than sitting on the already-hot iron.
Making the connections
- Keep the iron and the lugs tinned.
- Apply the iron directly to the lug until it has transferred enough heat, then feed a little solder onto the joint.
- Remove the iron, let the joint cool, and do not disturb it while it sets.
- Tug-test each joint by gently pulling on the wire. The connections must be strong, because you will drag them into place through the interior of the body.
Once your joints hold, route the harness back through the cavities and seat the control board and jack in their positions.
Section 4: Installing strings and final setup
Setup is what turns an assembled kit into an instrument that plays well, so do not rush it. Tune the bass to concert pitch and re-check the tuning constantly, because every adjustment changes the tension on the neck.
Installing the bass strings
With a trapeze tailpiece and a floating bridge, stringing follows a clear order.
- Anchor each string’s ball end on the trapeze tailpiece.
- Lay the string over the correct saddle on the floating bridge and up to its tuner.
- Feed it through the tuner post, leave a little slack for winding, and wind on neatly so the string seats in the nut slot.
- Bring all four strings up to pitch gradually, alternating across the neck so tension builds evenly. As tension comes on, the trapeze tailpiece and the floating bridge settle into place.
Bass strings are heavy and stiff, so work slowly and keep your fingers clear as the bridge takes tension.
Adjusting the neck relief
A good neck has a small amount of inward bow, or relief, to give the strings room to vibrate. A dead-straight neck usually buzzes. Check it by holding down the string at the first and last fret, then tapping it at the 12th fret. If the string already sits hard on the fret, you need more relief. If it sits well above the fret, you can reduce relief.
Adjust relief with the truss rod using the hex key from your kit. Turn counter-clockwise to loosen the rod and add relief, or clockwise to flatten the neck. Make only small changes, an eighth to a quarter turn at a time, and keep the bass tuned to pitch so the string tension is correct while you work.

Adjusting the action
Action is the height of the strings above the fretboard, usually measured at the 12th fret from the top of the fret to the underside of the string. If you are unsure where to start, try 2.4 mm on the low E side and 1.6 mm on the high E side, allowing for the different string gauges. Tune up before you measure. On this bass you raise or lower the action at the bridge: raise the bridge to increase action, lower it to reduce action.

Intonating the bass with the floating bridge
Intonation means the bass plays in tune with itself along the whole neck. Check it by tuning each open string, then comparing it to the note at the 12th fret, which should be exactly one octave up. If the 12th-fret note is sharp, the string is too short and needs lengthening. If it is flat, the string is too long and needs shortening.
Because the bridge floats, you set intonation in two stages. First, slide the whole bridge forward or back until the octaves are roughly right, keeping it square to the neck and its feet flat on the top. Then fine-tune each string with the intonation adjustment screws at the front of the bridge: turn a screw counter-clockwise to lengthen the string, or clockwise to shorten it. Tune up again before each check. This per-string compensation is why the bridge sits at a slight angle, since the heavier strings need more length than the lighter ones.
Pro tip: Before you ever loosen the strings again, mark the bridge’s position on the top with a strip of low-tack tape. A floating bridge is held only by string tension, so it will slide out of place the moment you slacken the strings.
Adjusting the pickup height
Pickup height is mostly a matter of taste and what you hear, but a good starting point is 2.4 mm from the top of the magnetic pole piece to the underside of the string, measured while you hold the string down at the last fret. Raise or lower each pickup with the mounting screws on the pickup surround. Higher is louder and more aggressive, lower is cleaner and more open, so trust your ears.
Final check
When everything is set, play the bass through its paces. Move through each pickup position and test the volume controls and the tone switches. Take your hands off the strings and listen for hum, which points to a grounding problem in the cavity. Finally, play every fret up and down each string and listen for buzz or dead notes. Most buzz is solved by revisiting your action or your neck relief.
