You are about to build a real, playable electric guitar from an X-shape kit, and you do not need to be a professional woodworker to do it. This is a radical X-shape (star-shape) solid body, usually loaded with two humbuckers, joined with a set-neck or neck-through neck, and fitted with either a Tune-O-Matic bridge and tailpiece or a string-through-body setup. This guide covers the whole DIY guitar kit assembly, from inspecting the raw body through finishing, hardware, wiring, and final setup. Take your time. There is no rush, and the most common beginner mistake is hurrying. Read each section fully before you start it, keep your work area clean, and enjoy the process.

Why the X-shape is an advanced build
The X-shape earns its Advanced rating for three reasons, and each one comes down to the shape itself. The long points make the body awkward to lay flat and hard to clamp without denting or snapping a tip. Those same sharp points, along with the inside corners where the arms of the X meet, are the trickiest areas to finish evenly. And a body with this much reach out at the points can be prone to neck dive on a strap, so balance takes a little planning. None of this is difficult once you know it is coming. We flag each of these spots as we reach it.
What’s in the box
Your exact contents depend on the kit, so check the parts against your product page. A typical X-shape kit includes:
- Prepped X-shape solid body
- Completed neck (set-neck or neck-through, depending on the kit)
- Neck plate, neck plate cushion, and screws (if your kit is bolt-on)

- Denatured alcohol (or a cleaning product with a degreasing ability)
- 0000 fine-grade steel wool
- Solder (and a sponge for cleaning the tip of the iron)
- A container for storing finishing supplies
Safety first
- Protective eyewear: Use safety glasses or a genuine face shield, not regular prescription glasses, reading glasses, or sunglasses.
- Disposable gloves: Wear disposable gloves if you are applying stains or oil finishes directly to the guitar.
- Masks: Use an N95 rated dust mask for sanding and an R95 rated particle mask for finishing. If you use water-based finishing products, an N95 dust mask may be enough for both sanding and finishing, but check the finishing supplier’s recommendations first. Paint fumes are dangerous.
- A well ventilated work area: Keep your workspace well ventilated, especially when finishing, to prevent a build-up of potentially toxic fumes.
Section 1: Inspect and dry-fit the neck
Inspect the body
Once the kit is unboxed, inspect the body and neck carefully under good light. Identify any problem areas early, before you start the project. Look for large dents that need filling, deep scratches that need sanding, and glue residue on the surface that would stop your finish from soaking in evenly.
Dry-fit the neck
Insert the neck: First push the heel gently into the back of the neck pocket, then push the neck down flat. Doing it in that order reduces the risk of chipping the thin edges of the neck pocket before the neck is installed.
Check the scale length: Measure from the edge of the nut closest to the fretboard to the middle of the 12th fret, then double that number. If the scale length seems out by a few millimeters, keep in mind that the bridge sits at a slight angle to compensate for the extra mass of the thicker bass strings, and the saddles can be moved forward or back later with the intonation adjustment screws.
Check the neck alignment: Once the neck is seated in the pocket, it should have very little sideways movement. If it does move, mark the center of the neck heel and line it up with the center of your neck and bridge pickup cavities. If that leaves a gap on either side of the neck, you may need to shim it by cutting small sections of scrap wood with a craft knife and gluing them to the sides of the neck pocket. Smaller gaps can simply be filled before finishing.
Check the neck angle: With the bridge and steel ruler still in place after the alignment check, run the steel ruler along the fretboard and over the bridge. When the bridge sits flat against the body, the ruler should sit just above the saddles.
Section 2: Shape the headstock (optional)
Some kits arrive with the headstock already shaped, and some leave it as a blank for you to design. If you are shaping yours, start by sketching some rough concepts, then transfer your chosen design to paper at full size. Leave a margin of at least 15 mm between the last tuning hole and the edge of the headstock (roughly the same distance you have between the tuning peg holes).
- Cut out your full-size design and glue it to a thin scrap piece of timber to use as a template. Cardboard also works well and is often easier to shape.
- Using a coping saw, jigsaw, or ideally a bandsaw, cut out the headstock shape and sand the template edges smooth.
- Clamp the template to the headstock with a small clamp and carefully trace the outline.
From there, either cut using the template as a guide, or remove the clamp and cut along the lines you traced. Protect the neck while you cut, stay well outside the lines to leave room for sanding, and keep the saw as vertical as you can for straight edges. If you are unsure, keep the design simple. A well executed simple design beats a poorly executed complex one. When you are done, sand the edges until they are as smooth as the rest of the neck and body.
Section 3: Join the neck
How you join the neck depends on your kit.
- If your kit is neck-through, the neck runs the full length of the body and the body wings are already glued on, so there is no neck to install. Move on to Section 4.
- If your kit is bolt-on, finish the body and neck separately first, then bolt them together after the finish has cured (see the neck plate step in Section 6). To handle the body safely while finishing, build a handle from a section of scrap wood that fixes into the neck pocket.
- If your kit is set-neck, glue the neck in now, before finishing, as described below.
Gluing a set neck
- Clean out the neck pocket and the neck heel. Brush away any dust and make sure both surfaces are clean.
- Using a paintbrush, apply PVA or a similar wood glue evenly across the bottom of the neck pocket and the neck heel. Aim for an even coating on both surfaces.
- Clamp the neck to the body. One clamp works, but two is better. Keep scrap wood on hand to protect the guitar’s surface under the clamps, and clamp firmly.
- Follow the glue’s instructions for when it is safe to remove the clamps and handle the guitar. In most cases, leaving it overnight is enough.
Clamping an X-shape safely: The long points make this body awkward to lay flat, and a clamp resting on a point can dent or snap it. Support the body on a soft cradle or foam so the points do not carry the weight, and place a padded caul under every clamp so nothing bites into the wood.
Section 4: Prepare the surface for finishing
Sand the body and neck
Check the body again for glue stains. Most can be sanded out, but if you see a stain on a veneer top, remember the veneer is thin, so first try lifting the stain with a little warm water and a clean rag.
- Start by sanding the entire body with 180 grit sandpaper.
- Follow up with 240 grit. If you are staining raw wood directly, sand up to 400 grit, but going smoother than that can affect how well the stain soaks in.
- After 240 grit, wipe a small amount of moisture over the surface. Denatured alcohol is a good choice because it evaporates before it soaks into the timber, though water works too. This raises the grain, which you then sand flat.
Grain generally only raises once, so once you have knocked it back you can finish with confidence.
Grain filling (optional)
Grain filling depends on your wood and whether you want a flat finish. Open-grain timbers such as Oak or Mahogany have open pores that prevent a flat finish unless they are filled. Basswood is mostly optional. If you are painting a solid color, a primer will often level and seal the surface instead. If you are staining, you can grain fill either before or after, though filling first usually gives a more even result. Fillers come in solvent, water, and oil-based options, along with pre-tinted versions. Oil-based fillers penetrate deeper, while water-based fillers are easier to work with for drying time and cleanup. A tinted filler is a great way to accentuate the grain, because the excess sands off the surface while the filler left in the pores stays and emphasizes the pattern.
- Mix enough filler for the whole guitar. Follow the product’s directions for application, cleanup, and safety, then mix it into a workable paste in a spare container.
- Apply it with a clean rag, first working along the grain, then across the grain, really pushing the filler into the wood over several passes.
- Leave the guitar for about ten minutes, then wipe away the excess with a clean damp rag.
- Once dry, sand back to the surface, working through the grits from 120 up to 240. Sand enough to remove the excess, but not so much that you dig into the wood and open new pores.
- Inspect the surface and repeat if needed.
Section 5: Masking and finishing
Masking
When you spray any finish, mask the neck pocket and the body cavities. Mask the tuning peg holes on the headstock to keep them clean, along with the holes for the bridge and tailpiece, and pay special attention to the truss rod. Mask the fretboard when you spray the back of the neck. If your body has binding, you can either mask it (some finish usually creeps under the tape and needs cleaning up) or leave it and scrape it clean with a razor blade before your clear coats. Scraping is usually the better use of time, but if you notice any cracks in the binding, mask it, because finish will soak into a crack and stain it permanently.
Finishing
It is beyond the scope of this guide to cover every way to finish an electric guitar, but these rules apply to almost every finish:
- Consider how protective a finish is and how it might affect tone as well as looks.
- Choose the finish to suit the wood. It would be a shame to hide a beautiful grain pattern under a solid color, and staining a plain piece of basswood may not look great either.
- Wear gloves and a mask and work in a well ventilated area. Fumes from some finishing products can be toxic.
- Clean the body with a product that includes a degreasing agent.
- Wear disposable gloves when you handle the guitar after cleaning.
- Work in a relatively dust-free environment, and clean the body cavities thoroughly after sanding. Dust collects in the cavities, and it becomes airborne the moment you turn the guitar over.
- If you are staining, wipe away any excess that has not soaked in after about ten minutes.
- Check that your products are compatible. If you are spraying from cans, use the same brand and type of paint for your seal coat, color coat, and clear coats.
- If you have to spray outside, avoid windy days.
- Spray the sides of the body first. That way, when you spray the front and back, you are spraying over any overspray from the sides.
- Do not spray heavy coats. Several light coats beat one or two heavy coats, which are prone to runs.
- Check the binding for cracks. If any are present, mask the binding before a colored finish, or the finish will soak in and cannot be undone.
- Do not lay down too many coats inside the recommended drying times. If you spray more than three coats in a day, your first coat may struggle to cure.
- If you use steel wool on the body before finishing, remove every stray fiber.
- Always hang the guitar to dry in a cool, dry place. Do not leave it outside, where it will attract dust.
- You can usually respray within an hour. If you leave it longer, you may need to wait 24 hours and then lightly scuff the surface with 600 to 800 grit sandpaper so the next coats adhere. This depends on your product, so check the label.
Finishing the points and corners: The sharp points and the inside corners where the arms of the X meet are the hardest areas to coat evenly. Finish tends to pool in the inside corners and run off the points, and it is very easy to sand through the finish on a sharp tip. Spray lighter passes over the points, watch the inside angles for runs, and sand the tips by hand with a gentle touch.
Section 6: Install the hardware
Installing hardware means fitting the tuners, strap buttons, bridge, and pickups, plus the truss rod cover. A few best practices apply throughout, especially drilling pilot holes and aligning each part carefully.
Pilot holes (do this for every screw)
Drill a pilot hole for every screw that goes into the body or neck. The small screws that hold your tuners, for example, are fragile and easy to strip.
- Put masking tape where the hole will go and mark the spot with a pen. Pencil rarely gives a sharp line on tape.
- Make an indentation in the wood through the tape with a center punch or similar tool.
- Choose a drill bit about two-thirds the thickness of the screw, and mark the drilling depth with a small piece of masking tape at roughly two-thirds the depth of the screw.
- Always aim to drill straight. A drill press is ideal if you have one.
- Use a countersink bit (or similar) to chamfer the edge of any hole in the body, especially under a solid color finish, to prevent chipping.
Note: On less dense timbers such as Mahogany and Basswood, you may want to drill to less than one-third of the screw depth.
Truss rod cover
The truss rod cover is not strictly hardware, but it is worth centering neatly on the headstock. The simplest way is to run masking tape down the headstock, measure to the halfway point across it, and draw a centerline from the nut to the end of the headstock. For example, a nut width of 42 mm gives a centerline at 21 mm, so measure your own nut and halve it. Align the cover with the nut and center it by lining up the hole at its tip with your centerline.
Strap buttons and balance
Strap buttons support the guitar when you play standing, and their placement also affects how the guitar balances. Fit the rear strap button in the center of the lower bout, out toward the lower point, and the front button on the upper horn or arm. Follow the pilot-hole method above for both.
Balance an X-shape before you drill: A radical X-shape can be prone to neck dive, where the headstock drops toward the floor when you take your hands off on a strap. Before you drill anything permanent, hold the guitar on a strap and test the balance. Moving the upper button as far back along the arm as the shape allows helps a lot, and a wider, grippier strap also keeps a lively body in place.
Tuners
Many X-shape kits use a 3-a-side tuner layout, three per side, though some use 6-in-line tuners on a pointed headstock. If yours is 3-a-side, separate the tuners into left and right sets first. Check your product page if you are unsure which you have.
- Insert each tuner into the back of the headstock with the mounting hole facing back toward the body.
- Place the washers over the tuning posts, then add the bushings and hand-tighten the tuners.
- Align the tuners with a steel rule.
- Mark the mounting screw locations, drill your pilot holes, and install the small screws.
- Remove the protective covering by pressing masking tape firmly onto the back of each tuner and pulling the tape and covering off in one action.
Alignment tip: Install the first and last tuner, then use a steel rule to mark a straight line between them on masking tape to lay out the rest of the pilot holes.
Bridge and grounding
Next, thread the ground wire into the bridge post hole and fit the bridge bushing. There should be a loose black ground wire in your packaging. Look for a small hole on the side of the bridge post hole nearest the control cavity, just big enough to thread the ground wire through to the electronics cavity.
- Strip a few millimeters of the coating to expose the bare wire.
- Thread the wire so the bare end will sit flush against the side of the bridge or tailpiece post bushing once it is installed.
- Make a small hook in the top of the wire so it sits at the top of the post hole before you fit the bushing.
- Remove the post from the bushing.
- Press the bushing into the pre-drilled hole, making sure the ground wire ends up flush against it. You may need a rubber mallet to seat it fully.
- Screw the bridge posts into the bridge bushings, and the tailpiece posts into the tailpiece bushings.
- Fit the bridge over the bridge posts, but leave the tailpiece for now. It will not stay in place until the strings are on.
If your kit is string-through-body instead, the strings pass through ferrules in the back of the body rather than a stopbar tailpiece. The bridge still needs grounding, so check your wiring diagram for where the ground wire attaches.
Pickups
First, tell the neck and bridge pickups apart. The easiest way is by the pickup surround: the one with the deeper surround is the bridge pickup.
- Take either pickup and position it so the pickup wires sit near a corner of the pickup cavity.
- Route the pickup wires through the channel that runs from the pickup cavity to the control cavity, then pull them through into the control cavity with needle-nose pliers.
- Install the low E and high E strings for reference.
- Sit the pickups at the front of the cavity, then align them so the pole pieces line up under the low E and high E strings. A square against the edge of the fretboard helps you check.
- Mark your pilot holes, remove the pickups, and drill.
Section 7: Wire the electronics
Soldering basics
If you have not soldered before, you need a soldering iron, solder, and a damp sponge to clean the tip. Practice on a scrap wire or lug before you commit solder to your components. Most entry-level irons are fine, and your kit comes with plenty of solder.
Safety warning: Soldering irons get very hot. Solder does not melt until about 185°C (365°F), and irons can reach 392°F to 896°F (roughly 200°C to 480°C). Rest the iron in its stand whenever it is not in your hand.
Two ideas do most of the work:
- Tinning: Keep a light coating of solder on the tip of your iron. Tinning stops the tip from oxidizing and helps it transfer heat.
- Preheating: Soldering is really about transferring heat. Heat the lug or component you are joining so the solder is drawn to it, rather than staying on the hot iron.
The wiring plan
Most kit electronics come pre-soldered, apart from the wires that pass through the body cavities. On this solid body, the controls, switch, and jack sit in the rear electronics cavity, and the wires route through drilled channels from the pickup and jack positions into that cavity. This is more straightforward than it looks once everything is in front of you.
Mounting the controls, jack, and switch
- Seat each pot through its hole from the top of the body and secure it with its washer and nut. If a thick finish leaves too little thread showing, chamfer the hole slightly with a small countersink bit so the washer and nut have room to bite.
- Fit the input jack into the jack cavity and secure it with its plate, washer, and screw so it cannot move.
- Mount the 3-way selector switch in its position (many X-shape kits place it on the upper arm of the body) and secure it with its washer and nut.
Connecting the pickups
Now connect the neck and bridge pickup wires to their respective volume pots. This should be the only soldering you need to do.
- The unshielded ground wires connect to the back of the volume pots.
- The shielded hot wires connect to the input lug of the volume pots. That is the lug on the right-hand side of the pot when the pot is facing away from you.
- The bridge ground wire you threaded earlier also solders to the back of a pot. If you are unsure of any connection, check your wiring diagram.
To solder each joint, warm up the iron and set the controls somewhere stable so they do not move. Keep the iron and the components tinned. Apply heat directly to the lug until it is hot enough, then feed a little solder onto the joint. Remove the iron, let the joint cool, and test it by gently tugging the wire.
Once everything is connected, test the pickups, then fit the tone and volume knobs and restring the guitar. The wiring is complete.
Section 8: Set up the guitar
The final stage is the setup, and it makes all the difference to how the guitar plays and sounds. There are four areas to work through:
- Neck relief
- String action
- Intonation
- Pickup height
Tune the guitar to concert pitch and check the tuning often as you go, so the strings keep the right tension on the neck while you adjust. You will likely revisit some of these settings after you have played the guitar for a while and noticed things like fret buzz or intonation drift.
Neck relief
A good neck has a small amount of inward bow, or relief, to give the strings room to vibrate. A neck that is too straight will very likely buzz. To check it, hold down the first and last frets on the low E string, then lightly tap the string at the 12th fret. If the string is already sitting hard against the fret, you need more relief. If it sits well above the fret, you can reduce the relief.
Adjust relief with the truss rod, using the hex key from your kit. Turn it counterclockwise to loosen the rod and add relief. Turn it clockwise to flatten the neck. Only make small changes, one-eighth to one-quarter of a turn at a time, and keep the guitar tuned to concert pitch so the string tension is correct. Keep checking your tuning throughout.
String action
Action is the height of the strings above the fretboard, usually measured from the top of the 12th fret to the underside of the low E string. If you are unsure where to start, try 2.4 mm on the low E side and 1.6 mm on the high E side, allowing for the different string gauges. Make sure the guitar is in tune before you measure or adjust. Action is set at the bridge: loosen the bridge posts to raise it, tighten them to lower it.
Intonation
Intonation is whether the guitar plays in tune with itself. Tune to standard pitch, then compare the open string (or the 12th-fret harmonic) with the note fretted at the 12th fret, an octave up. If the fretted note is sharp, lengthen the string. If it is flat, shorten it. As noted earlier, scale length is not an exact measurement, because the heavier bass strings need some compensation, which is why most electric guitar bridges sit at an angle toward the bass side. To lengthen a string, turn its intonation screw at the front of the bridge counterclockwise. To shorten it, turn clockwise. Make sure the guitar is in tune before each check.
Pickup height
Like action, pickup height is mostly a matter of taste and what you are hearing. If you are unsure, start at about 2.4 mm from the top of the magnetic pole piece to the underside of the string, measured while pressing the string down at the last fret. Adjust the height with the mounting screws on the outside of the pickup surround.
Final checks and first play
That is the build complete. Before you call it done, run a few checks:
- Go through each pickup position and test both the volume and tone controls.
- Take your hands off the guitar and listen for hum. If you hear interference, open the electronics cavity and check your ground connections, especially the bridge ground.
- Play every fret on every string and listen for buzz or dead notes. Most of these can be solved by adjusting the action or the neck relief.
As you get used to the guitar, you may want to revisit parts of the setup. That is normal, and small tweaks over the first few weeks are part of dialing in a new build.
Beginner watch-outs

- Pro tip: Scrape binding clean with a razor blade rather than masking it, unless the binding is cracked, in which case mask it so finish cannot soak in.
- Pro tip: Spray the sides of the body first, so when you spray the front and back you blend over any overspray from the sides.
- Pro tip: Use a tinted grain filler if you want to accentuate the grain. The color stays down in the pores after you sand the surface back.
- Pro tip: Practice soldering on a scrap lug or wire before you touch your components, and keep the iron tip tinned throughout.
- Pro tip: Chamfer the edge of every drilled hole in the body with a countersink bit to stop a solid color finish from chipping.
- Pro tip: Build a scrap-wood handle that fixes into the neck pocket so you can hold the body while finishing without touching wet surfaces or the points.
